Luther de Koker, the founding member of Bowtime Archery Club, has a deep-rooted passion for archery that stems from a unique origin. His journey began in 2009 while a Senior Trainer for SA Hunt, when he was tasked with starting up a youth program centred around archery.
This led him to pursue archery, becoming one of only a handful National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) Specialists in South Africa under the guidance of Wilhelm Greeff and Roy Grimes. While coaching young archers and guiding them to national and even world championships (at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports in 2012), Luther’s own interest in the sport ignited.
In 2013, he opened an archery shop and range with a couple of friends and people who then shared the same passion, Bowtime, marking a significant turning point. He since has dedicated himself to both coaching and personal shooting, though the demands of coaching often took and still takes precedence. Despite the challenges of limited practice time and juggling a demanding full-time job, Luther remained committed to developing young talent and keeping Bowtime’s doors open.
Luther’s impact on the archery community extends far beyond Bowtime. He has held key positions within various organizations, including:
He is a SANAA & SANIFAA Accredited Instructor and has served as a Pro Staff Shooter for Bowtech and PSE locally in South Africa.
Achievements and Aspirations:
Luther has achieved numerous accolades, including representing South Africa at the IFAA Indoor Championships in Kent, England in 2023. He continues to strive for personal and professional growth, with goals that include colours in all disciplines.
Luther’s commitment to youth development is unwavering. He believes that coaching and nurturing talent is his most significant contribution to the sport, always taking a step back to helps fellow archers.
Tania de Koker has been a valuable asset to her husband for many years, playing a crucial role in supporting him in his archery training and development efforts since 2009.
While Tania herself doesn’t shoot competitively, she’s been through a few “winter bows” (apparently they only shoot in winter 🤪).
Tania has a deep passion for working with kids and introducing them to the wonderful sport of archery. She has extensive experience teaching archery using the Genesis bow and providing guidance to beginners.
Tania’s dedication and hard work have been instrumental as she has consistently gone above and beyond to ensure that the administrative tasks run smoothly.
Daniel Thomas, has a passion for archery since 2015.
“I started my journey to share the fun with my daughters and quickly discovered a love for the sport myself.
I began with a compound bow, but my fascination with recurve led me to delve into that style as well. Over the years, I’ve developed a particular expertise in teaching Genesis bows to kids and introducing new archers to this exciting sport.
I enjoy providing guidance and support to those who are eager to learn archery. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to improve your skills, I’m here to help you reach your goals.”
Sharon Swanepoel is a dedicated archer whose journey began in 2013, inspired by her daughter and friends. She started with compound bows but quickly developed a strong affinity for recurve bows. Through self-learning and practice, Sharon has become a skilled archer with a particular focus on form and posture.
While she holds a few records, Sharon’s primary motivation is the love of the sport itself, rather than the accolades. She enjoys sharing her knowledge and expertise, offering guidance to fellow archers and helping them improve their technique.
Hilgard Strydom brings a wealth of experience to our organization, particularly in the field of IT.
Hilgard’s journey with archery began with his sons’ interest in the sport. This family activity soon sparked his own passion for archery. While he actively participates in shooting himself, his IT background has played a significant role in contributing to the sport’s development.
Hilgard’s expertise in IT led him to design a provincial archery program, which has subsequently been adopted by numerous clubs across South Africa. As a qualified instructor, he is dedicated to working with young archers and helping them develop their skills using the Genesis bow.
While Hilgard primarily shoots compound bows, his love for the Genesis bow is evident. His commitment to the sport extends beyond his personal shooting, as he spends countless hours working behind the scenes with software and IT to streamline administrative tasks and alleviate frustrations for other archers.
Eric Kietzmann is a passionate supporter of archery, initially drawn to the sport by his children’s involvement. While he may have stepped back from active shooting, his commitment to the sport remains strong.
Eric’s background in telecommunications, cameras, and IT has made him a valuable asset to his local archery club. He has played a significant role in designing the camera layout and has been involved in various other initiatives to support the club’s activities.
Despite his focus on supporting the club’s administrative needs, Eric remains a dedicated recurve archer. His passion for the sport is evident in his willingness to go above and beyond to assist other members and alleviate the administrative burdens associated with archery.
