A Night of Arrows and Analytics
Monday evening, our regular league night took an unexpected turn. Instead of the usual competition, we decided to embark on a unique learning experience: a basic bow tuning workshop.
The goal wasn’t to showcase our expertise, but to share insights that might have been overlooked or misunderstood by our fellow archers. We wanted to create a collaborative environment where everyone could learn from each other.
Archers were divided into pairs and guided through a series of stations. They measured bow poundage, arrow weight, wingspan, and height. Using a chronograph, they determined arrow speed. With these measurements in hand, we used mathematical formulas and spreadsheets to calculate each archer’s ideal draw length, kinetic energy, and calculated draw length.
Next, we delved into paper tuning, a technique used to ensure proper arrow flight. Finally, we discussed the importance of sight adjustment and the concept of “inducing talk” while shooting to build in a degree of forgiveness.
After the workshop, we moved to the 20-yard line to see the results firsthand. The evening was a resounding success, and everyone left with new knowledge and a deeper understanding of their equipment.
As the saying goes, the proof is in the pudding, or in this case, on the target. We were thrilled to see the positive impact our workshop had on the accuracy and enjoyment of our fellow archers.
A big thank you to everyone who joined us for this memorable evening. We look forward to doing it again soon!
